Every Bite Is Pure Joy

PureJoy_1712When I first began photographing the trash I find for my PlanetTrash blog, I always took pictures of McDonald’s litter because there was so much of it around.

Later I read that McDonald’s trash is the most common in Britain. I agree that it is the most common fast food litter that I find.

I have not photographed any McDonald’s litter in quite a while. I could not resist photograghing this bag because of the tagline: Every Bite Is Pure Joy.

Every bite of the honeydew melon I ate earlier today was pure joy. I do not associate pure joy with any food item from McDonalds.

McDonald’s waste makes up largest proportion of fast food litt…

Wrappers and cups from McDonald’s meals make up nearly a third of fast food litter on Britain’s streets, according to a survey. By Louise Gray, Environment Correspondent

Last Updated: 12:43PM GMT 13 Jan 2009

Keep Britain Tidy looked at litter in 10 cities over two days in the first attempt to discover which brand names were most commonly discarded.

Fast food litter was second to cigarette ends in littering the country’s streets and 29 per cent of that was from McDonald’s restaurants, followed by boxes and cups from unbranded kebab and fast food shops. Greggs the bakers generated almost a fifth of the fast food litter, followed by Kentucky Fried Chicken, Subway and a number of coffee brands.

I discovered the same thing in the United States last January as recorded on my blog, The Earth Is Not a Trash Can.

McDonald’s Egg McMuffin is Trash

I didn’t know what this food was when I first spotted it. Well, I knew that the first one was bread. I’m certain that it’s an aging Egg McMuffin from the evil empire of McDonald’s.

I ate an Egg McMuffin, when these “food” items were first introduced. I never ate a second one. Neither did the person who dropped this one.

Fast Food Trash Finale

whitecastle_0855.jpg

Here are the final pictures I took the day I found all the fast food litter (Taco Bell and White Castle) on Newsom Station Road. You know what it tastes like; you know what it looks like; you know what it tastes like a few hours later; you now know what it looks like days later on the street.

Feel free to contact the fast food vendors and let them know how you feel about their clients trashing our earth. Remember, too, that my dog once refused to eat a McDonald’s burger.

McDonalds Is the King of Litter

We find more trash from McDonalds fast food than any other. I consider McDonalds an evil empire.

If we could eliminate all the meat processing that supplies McDonalds, global warming would be a thing of the past.

Fast Food Faction

I quit eating fast food years ago, when I gave my dog a McDonalds burger, and he refused to eat it. I thought that it would be a special treat for him Was I wrong! He finally ate it after sniffing and playing with the patty. I ate a McDonalds with him. We both had an unusual, but similar, body odor later in the day.

Almost three years ago we gave up meat (anything that walks: chicken, turkey, pork, beef, never ate lamb). We did it for health reasons, but we’ve learned since then, that commercialized meat production is bad for the environment and adds to global warming.

The waste created after a fast food meal is also bad for the environment. Recently, we’ve had an enormous amount of fast food packaging thrown along the road leading to our house. In less than an hour, I snapped over fifty images of fast food garbage dumped on the side of the road. We’ll be featuring this trash starting tonight with A as in Arby’s.

You can go here and ask Arby’s to pick up the litter in your community. I just did.

My Dream Come True

This news item from the Evening Telegraph is something I’d like to see in the U.S.:

Takeaways told to clean up their act

By Jennifer Coles
BUSINESSES selling takeaway food and drink are being urged to clean up their act and encourage customers to keep the streets clean. Wellingborough Council will be sending letters to takeaway restaurants in the new year, asking them to take steps to help reduce litter.

Environmental warden Mark Reneerkens said: “A significant proportion of litter in our town centre is caused by the customers of businesses that sell food and drink for immediate consumption outdoors.

“We are trying to encourage businesses to work with us to reduce litter by asking them to look at public education, packaging and litter clearance.”

The restaurants are being asked to display anti-littering posters on their premises, to consider using less packaging, for example asking customers whether or not they need a bag, and to clear litter 100 metres around their premises.

Mr Reneerkens said: “Customers buying food for immediate consumption do not always need a covering, and sometimes they can make do with a base container.

“We are asking takeaways to bear in mind that customers often eat while they walk and will drop litter up to 100 metres from the shop, so the shops need to widen their net when they pick up litter.”

Huseyin Ozen, who runs Wellingborough Kebab Shop in High Street, said: “I think the letter is a good thing. On weekends when people are drunk they tend to drop things all over the High Street, and we can all do our bit to make it tidier. If we tell them not to they won’t always listen but it is certainly worth a try.

“My staff go out now and then and pick up anything they see.”

Duty manager at McDonald’s Nicola Hollis said: “We have our own litter policy and we send staff out to pick up litter within a 200-metre radius, so the council’s letter will have little effect on us.

“I think it is a good thing that they are sending out the message to other fast-food outlets, because when I come to work on a Saturday morning there is quite often litter strewn up and down the High Street.”

I would not miss the following when I’m out walking.

Fast food companies need to educate their consumers to stop littering.
