Rig carrying kitty litter overturns on I-85

By Paul Alongi • STAFF WRITER • March 12, 2009

A tractor-trailer overturned on northbound Interstate 85 in Greenville County, closing all northbound lanes near the Anderson County line until about 5 p.m., said Lance Cpl. Kathy Hiles of the state Highway Patrol.

The truck spilled kitty litter, which is not hazardous, Hiles said.

A minivan experienced a sudden flat tire and swerved to the right, Hiles said. The truck swerved to avoid the van and hit a bridge support under State 153 before going left, striking the median and overturning, Hiles said.

The wreck remains under investigation.

I’m “amused” that the state highway patrol officer said that kitty litter is ot hazardous. No, it will not cause a fire, but it is not great for the environment.
