They’re the “Desperate Dozen” and their names sound like characters in a period murder mystery novel: chucky madtom, Pearl darter and slender chub.

The 12 are harmless enough but they themselves are on the brink — they’re the Southeastern fishes considered the most likely to disappear the soonest.
