Is There a History of Littering

Currently I’m reading Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. In the beginning of the book, George and Lennie are preparing cans of beans for dinner in their camp. After they eat, Steinbeck writes that George tosses the cans into the brush. That little insignificant detail in this great story stayed with me.

I remember as a child, playing and finding rusted out cans. Now I wonder how long those cans had been there and who left them. When did Americans start littering?

I don’t get this. This is a book not an answer to my question.

This does not answer my question. I will now be using Google.
